Limitations

Transparency about what our data can and cannot tell you.

Reporting Lag

Federal datasets are typically 6–18 months behind real time. CMS quality data for a given year is published the following fall. Cost reports lag by 12–18 months. This means recent operational changes at a hospital may not yet be reflected.

Medicare-Centric

Quality and utilization measures are primarily derived from the Medicare population (65+ and disabled). Hospitals that serve a younger or commercially insured population may look different to those patients than what our Medicare-based measures suggest.

Price Transparency Compliance Varies

Not all hospitals publish complete or well-formatted machine-readable files. Some files are missing payer-specific rates, use non-standard codes, or are updated infrequently. We parse what is available but cannot guarantee completeness.

Affiliation Linkage Is Probabilistic

Physician-to-hospital affiliations are built from CMS enrollment and claims data. A physician may practice at multiple facilities, and not all affiliations are captured — especially for part-time or consulting relationships.

No Risk Adjustment for Pricing

Negotiated rates from price transparency files are shown as-is. They are not risk-adjusted or severity-adjusted. Two hospitals may show different prices for the same CPT code due to differences in patient complexity, not efficiency.

Specialty Hospitals

Specialty hospitals (psychiatric, rehabilitation, long-term acute care, children's) have different measure sets and may have incomplete profiles compared to general acute care hospitals.

Small Sample Sizes

Small or rural hospitals may have measures suppressed by CMS due to low case volumes. When measures are missing, composite scores are calculated from available data, which may be less reliable.
